Debra L. Stanley, Ph.D.

Debra StanleyDebra L. Stanley, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Division of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Social Policy at the University of Baltimore, and the Director of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland. Her research agenda is primarily in the areas of child homicide, child victimization, domestic violence, substance abuse and crime, and program evaluation. Dr. Stanley has been the principal investigator for numerous federal, state and local research grants. A sample of some of her research projects includes a National Cross-Site Evaluation of Criminal Justice Substance Abuse Treatment Programs for the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment; a statewide evaluation of the Youth Strategies Grant as the primary researcher for programs administered in Washington County Maryland; a program evaluation of a domestic violence program; development and evaluation of substance abuse and violence treatment and prevention programs; and the development and research of the first multidisciplinary domestic violence assessment, referral, and treatment team in the State of Maryland. She co-developed and led the research for the Connecticut Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board. She has organized national and state level workshops, trainings, and conferences. Her current research includes a study on child victimization and its effects on later delinquency. Dr. Stanley's research has been published and presented at conferences throughout the United States. She co-authored the training handbook for the Roper Victim Assistance Academy and the Connecticut State Victim Assistance Academy. She is co-author of a book titled Prisons in America, (ABC-CLIO, 1999), and section editor and author of Victims and Victimology for an edited volume titled, Encyclopedia of Women and Crime (Oryx Press, 2000). She is currently working on several books, one titled Youth Violence (ABC-CLIO), and another titled Domestic Violence: Theory, Policy, and the Law (Addison, Wesley and Longman).
